There's been a few iterations before I finally decided on your birthday gift, and I thought I'd write
up a nice little story about it.
Originally, I wanted to give you a font. I know you really like fonts, so that would make it a perfect
gift. However, since trouble arose in that area because I didn't know which ones, and you already have
many of the cool ones seeing you have the Adobe Type Library. I knew there were fonts you had been
looking at, but I didn't know which ones. I tried to glean this information from you without letting up
the surprise, but that didn't work out. On top of that, fonts come with licenses, and after closer
inspection they made it rather hard to use one as a gift (amongst other things). For starters, the
licenses were non-transferable, but they also had some nasty restrictions on usage. I'm also aware you
prefer font families over just fonts (and I'm also aware that I probably butchered the use of "font" in
this paragraph) which makes sense of course, so giving just a font might not have been the best option
regardless. Although Jeannette just cutely called it a "starter set" XD
I had called in the help of Jeannette for good font sites, since she knew a thing or two about them,
and she suggested I should find something else. From fonts we got to font software. I knew you had (a
version of) Fontographer, which doesn't do OpenType. And I know you like OpenType ;) So when I
found this little program called Foglamp, which
turns your Fontographer .fog files into OpenType fonts. However, after some reseach I found out that it
cannot take advantage of the better properties of OpenType (more characters, etc.) because it still
depends on Fontographer. So that kinda made it useless. However, there's an
evaluation version (for the Mac), so I
think you perhaps might want to check it out :) (I'm not sure if the link works though... there are
more on the page but they all time out for me. However, the Windows links do work, so maybe it's
something that only works on the Mac?)
Another idea I had was to look for some sort of promo/gift code thing to allow you to get the font you
wanted. I didn't come across any respectable font sites that had this sort of service though, so that
was shot out of the water too. However, the more general idea remained, and Jeannette spammed me with
US stores that did gift cards. I didn't want to give you just a gift card, because (in my opinion) that
is kinda lame. However, I realised the answer was right there all all along... so I browsed to the
headset section to see what they had ;) We had been discussing this recently, and the store I finally
settled on does internet orders, which they ship for free or which you can pick up after 24 minutes.
This worked nicely because I didn't have to bother you for your address in order to get it to you :)
I wanted to give it a personal touch though, so I let your Cogtree stuff inspire me. I hope you like
the drawing :) And if you look at the top of the page... I also got your rose some friends :D
I hope you like your gifts :) The only thing now that remains for me to say is... Have a great and
happy birthday Laury-laur!!!
